As of 1 July 2015 you do need a license to fly a UAV for commercial use. However for private or recreational use you do not need a license. Claims that licenses will cost upwards of R100 000 are false though. Thanks to the authors of safedrone.co.za, for more information on obtaining a license and the cost you can visit http://www.safedrone.co.za/how-to-operate-drones-legally.
Do I need training to fly a UAV?
Our UAV can be flown by uploading a mission via the telemetry downlink which makes it possible to fly the UAV with very little training, however current regulations determines that the pilot needs to be able to intervene when necessary should something go wrong. Our 32bit flight controller has a different option for different levels of skill which makes it possible for the amateur to learn by practicing.
